Need a new conventional boiler? Master Gas London has got you covered with our latest offer starting from £2435, including installation.

Conventional boiler overview

The most common form of boiler found in UK houses are conventional boilers, usually referred to as regular or heat only boilers. They operate by heating water that is kept in a hot water storage cylinder. These boilers are originally designed to work on gravity with an external circulating pump. They are also connected to a cold water storage tank and a feed and expansion tank typically installed in lofts. Conventional boilers, in contrast to combi boilers, require much more space to house all the necessary tanks and external components.

Hisory of Conventional Boilers

Conventional boilers have a long history dating back to the early 20th century. This is when they were first manufactured and started to appear in UK homes. Initially, they were created to cater to larger properties like country homes and mansions to provide heating and hot water. These boilers were typically fueled by oil or coal. However, with technological advancements over time, conventional boilers now come in modern gas and oil-fired models. As a result, they are now a popular choice for both domestic and commercial properties across the UK due to their efficiency.

Efficiency of Conventional Boilers

The efficiency rating of conventional boilers is generally between 70-80%, implying that nearly 30% of the fuel utilized is lost due to heat dissipation. This is primarily due to the stored hot water cylinder, which can lose heat if not insulated appropriately. Nevertheless, modern conventional boiler models now feature advanced insulation, leading to reduced heat loss and increased efficiency. Consequently, this results in lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.

Pros of Conventional Boilers

Simultaneous Hot Water Supply

Can provide hot water to multiple taps and showers simultaneously without loosing pressure or noticing a change in temperature.

Compatibility with Various Heating Systems

Conventional boilers are compatible with various heating systems, including underfloor heating, radiators, and hot water cylinders. Conventional boilers can be used with natural gas or oil which makes them a versatile option for both residential and commercial properties. Compatibility is crucial to ensure efficient heating.

Renewable Energy Options

Conventional boilers can work with solar thermal panels that use sunlight to heat water. This integration can help reduce costs and lower carbon emissions. However, compatibility with the solar thermal system is crucial. A qualified heating engineer can provide the best options for integrating a conventional boiler with solar thermal panels.

Cons of Conventional Boilers

Require More Space

Conventional boiler set ups can take up more space due to the need for a separate hot water cylinder, cold water tank and a feed and expansion tank.

Lower Efficiency

May not be as energy-efficient as other types of boilers such as combi boilers. This is due to heat loss and the need to heat a hot water storage cylinder.

More Expensive

Conventional systems are more complex and costly to install than combi or system boilers. The boilers themselves seem to be more expensive and require external components such as circulating pumps. The process of installing a conventional boiler is difficult due to air locks. Air locks can be time consuming and extremely difficult to remove. This can be adverted if the system is converted to a pressurised system whilst still using a conventional boiler, this will also add additional costs.

Things To Consider

When choosing a conventional boiler, there are a few other things to consider:

Size: The size of your boiler should be based on your property’s heating requirements, which a qualified heating engineer can determine.

Installation: Conventional boilers require professional installation to ensure they are installed safely and correctly.

Maintenance: Make sure you have your conventional boiler serviced regularly to keep it running smoothly and efficiently.

Efficiency: Look for a conventional boiler with a high efficiency rating to help reduce costs on your energy bills.

Decision: It could be a better choice to convert your existing conventional set up to a combi boiler or even a system boiler with an unvented cylinder.

Summary of Conventional Boilers

Conventional boilers remain a popular choice for homeowners due to their compatibility with various heating systems and reliability. Conventional boilers may not be as energy-efficient as other types of boilers but the fact that they can simultaneously provide hot water to multiple taps and showers may be more suited to requirements. This also makes them a better option than a combi boiler for larger homes and properties with multiple occupants. When choosing a conventional boiler, consider factors such as your home’s size, hot water demand, energy efficiency rating, and installation and maintenance costs.

I had received an extortionate quote from another company and wanted to compare it to Master Gas London. I spoke with Ed and he was so knowledgable and honest. He took the time to explain the different boiler options and let me know the pros and cons of the different boilers. He was very patient and I am so appreciative of the time he took with regards to the choices I could make. It is such a shame I am located too far away to use this company, as their professional response and advice was outstanding.

I was very anxious about my boiler to be fixed properly until I found Ed from the first telephone call, my anxiety has been eased off immediately because he was so polite, explained potential issues and he tried to book me in as quickly as possible even though he is very busy. He was so professional from beginning to end. At the site he investigated the problems and explained to me the issues and he didn’t leave until everything was sorted out properly. Today I was able to take a comfortable bath for the first time in a long time. Thank you Ed. Highly recommend and will definitely recommend to my friends!

Ed and team came to install a new boiler a few months back and I've been meaning to leave a review ever since because they were so great. Worked all day and didn't leave us until everything was working. They are more than happy to stay in touch if there's any follow ups too which is great.

FAQ'S

A condensing boiler, is a type of boiler that needs less fuel to produce heat. Heat that would ordinarily be lost while heating water is captured and recycled.

Condensing boilers function by capturing and recycling the heat that would otherwise be wasted during the water heating process. This is accomplished via a secondary heat exchanger, which enables them to attain superior efficiency levels.

Condensing boilers are typically more efficient compared to non-condensing boilers, with the capability to reach efficiency ratings of up to 98%. This can lead to noteworthy long-term energy savings.

The lifespan of a condensing boiler can fluctuate depending on multiple factors, including the frequency of usage, the installation quality, and the maintenance level it obtains. Nevertheless, a condensing boiler can last for up to 15 years or longer with adequate care.

Condensing boilers do require some special considerations when it comes to installation and maintenance. They require a condense pipe which must drain to waste.

Your property’s size, number of radiators and bathrooms will have an impact on the size of condensing boiler you need. To find the right size for your specific requirements, speak to a member of the team at Master Gas London or feel free to use our fixed price instant quote tool.

Yes, because they emit less carbon than non-condensing boilers, condensing boilers are considered an environmentally friendly heating alternative. They are also capable of achieving up to 98% efficiency. When combined with a smart thermostat and smart radiator valves, they can achieve even more efficiency.

Several variables, like the condensing boiler’s size, brand, and installation needs, will determine the price. The price for a condensing boiler will range from £500 to £2,500 or more.

Retrofitting a condensing boiler to an existing heating system is possible, but it may require adjustments to the current setup.
